What is Naturalization?

Naturalization is the immigration process on how an individual becomes a U.S. Citizen. Naturalization is the only way someone can become a citizen of the United States if they were not born a US citizen or if they did not acquire citizenship immediately after they were born. Before applying for naturalization, the individual must already have a permanent visa, otherwise known as a green card. In many instances, applying for naturalization is a lengthy and complicated process, which is why having lawyers guide you can make a difference. During the application process, the individual must submit various forms and documents that prove their eligibility.

Someone is a US citizen by birth if they were born within the boundaries of the United States, which includes the following territories:

  • Guam
  • The Virgin Islands
  • Puerto Rico

If the child is born abroad to 2 parents who are US citizens, then that child is also a citizen. On top of that, an individual may be a US citizen at birth if one of their parents is also a citizen. Additional requirements may need to be met.

The Benefits of Naturalization?

When it comes to naturalization, there are some key benefits. Which is why it is sought after by many in the United States. A naturalized citizen gets various privileges, that include the following:

  • Register and vote
  • Serve on a jury
  • Hold a United States passport

These benefits are important to many US citizens. The United States is a country that is founded on voting for your rights. So it is a big deal for many to gain that natural right as a citizen to vote in an election. The same goes with serving on a jury. Not as glamorous as voting, but still a duty to had a jury of peers on a trial. These are rights gained by naturalization and our team of lawyers can help you achieve these goals!

Requirements to Become a Naturalized Citizen

There are a few different requirements someone needs to hit in order to become a naturalized citizen of the United States. These requirements include the following:

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • A knowledge about and understanding of United States history and government
  • An attachment to the ideals of the US Constitution
  • Good moral character
  • A favorable disposition towards the United States
  • A continued residence or physical presence in the United States for a specified period

Our lawyers can help advise and guide you towards the completion of the Naturalization Application, or Form N-400. And help properly file it with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service Center. Other supplemental documents may be requested, which we can help you understand.

When filing, we will make copies of all the applications and documents so you have your own record. An individual should not send their original documents with their application unless an original signature is required. Our lawyers will help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure that you follow all of the steps properly.
